18 year old Alexander Areshchenko wins £2000 1st prize outright, ½ point ahead of the rest of the field!! World number 44 grandmaster Kiril Georgiev 2654 shares 2nd place with GM Zahar Efimenko with 7/9. The latter both shared equal first at GibTelcom earlier this year.
March 24th-28th 2005 Easter weekend
Following the success of the 1st Coventry International which was held last March and attracted 100 players, a second FIDE rated event was held at one of Coventry’s premier four-star hotels.
Although no IM or GM norms were made, several got close notably Polish IM Joanna
Dworakowka(WGM) who narrowly missed a grandmaster norm and the astounding result
of unrated Nottingham University student Alex Theirren BCF 177 who missed an
IM result by the same margin.
The pace of 9 rounds in 4½ days proved gruelling but the former soviet players seemed more hardened to the schedule and took the top three places. Maybe British players can get amongst the top places next year.
Based on the success of this tournament, with the venue switch at short notice, it is intended we hold another one next year, hopefully even stronger!
